‘Superfood’ has been a buzzword thrown around a lot over the past decade. To simplify the broad term, superfoods are simply—most commonly plant-based—foods that are full of nutrition and have positive health benefits that can help with specific issues one might be dealing with. Superfoods have been key ingredients in numerous cosmetics to gain all those health benefits in the form of skincare, haircare and supplements. Superfood cosmetics blur the lines between healing from the inside and treating from the outside.
1. Avocado
Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado, £39
With claims that Avocado can improve skin elasticity, it’s no surprise to see this little superfood pop up in the form of eye cream. This hydrating cream is designed for all skin types—including sensitive skin—and is used to de-puff and brighten the under-eye area.
2. Blueberries
Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser, $34
This blueberry-infused gel is a natural antioxidant that is rich in vitamins. The gentle cleanser is a luxurious texture and can double as a makeup remover. Other benefits include fighting free radicals, hydrating your skin with hyaluronic acid and gently exfoliating away dead skin with active ingredients.
3. Turmeric
APTO Skincare Healing Face Mist, £5
Turmeric is one of the most popular spices due to its health benefits and strong anti-inflammatory properties. This facial spray can strengthen & soothe the skin. Amino acids, vitamins, and antioxidants make this mist suitable for all skin types and are simply bursting with benefits.
4. Pomegranate
Pomegranate Superfood Brightening Eye Serum, £19
This juicy fruit is rich in antioxidants and can brighten the skin to give a more radiant glow. Raspberry seed oil is also infused in this rich serum to moisturise the skin with fatty acids. This serum is also vegan and is created using more natural ingredients.
5. Kale
Youth to The People Superfood Face Wash, $36
It’s hard to think of the word ‘superfood’ and not have a direct association with kale. This leafy green ingredient is packed with goodness, just like this gentle cleanser. Skincare by Hyram recently listed this product as one of his ultimate favourite cleansers, and we can see why. The ingredient list is simple, the benefits are undeniable and the product is cruelty free.
Sweet Chef
Finally, our last pick is Sweet Chef—sister brand to Glow Recipe— which is a brand that focuses on feeding your skin the most nutritious ingredients. A signature superfood is incorporated into each of their products (which range from serums to sheet masks & moisturisers). The cosmetics are enriched with ginger, kale, beetroot, and many other superfoods.
