The rise of CBD oil.
Since California legalised weed in select jurisdictions back in 2016, and continual changing attitudes to cannabis, we have seen a staggering rise in hemp and cannabis-infused products.
The number of people using cannabis oil to treat medical ailments in the UK has doubled in the past 12 months, with consumer numbers soaring from 125,000 to 250,000 according to the Cannabis Trades Association – even Kim Kardashian had a CBD themed baby-shower last month.
CBD has also risen within the beauty industry, popularised by the growing use of ‘clean’ beauty ingredients – with emerging dedicated stores such as The Chillery, and new product ranges (such as Milk), CBD has truly begun to slip into many a beauty routine as a key ingredient.
So, what is CBD?
Short for cannabidiol, it is a chemical component of cannabis. It influences the body’s balance of ‘feel good’ chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin.
What does CBD do?
When ingested, CBD can have a calming, anti-anxiety inducing effect – hence why it now can be prescribed to those who suffer from anxiety, epilepsy and other disorders of a similar nature. Plus, it has anti-inflammatory properties and can give some pain relief, so it’s also often prescribed to people who suffer from chronic pain.
It’s because of these properties and effects that CBD oil has been used in a vast variety of beauty and wellness products, and is continuing to be used as a key ingredient.
For example, as it’s anti-inflammatory, it’s excellent for acne sufferers, those with eczema, and rosacea. Plus, as it alleviates pain, CBD oil has begun to infiltrate its way into natural remedy period pain relief products.
CBD oil is also very moisturising, so combined with its calming properties, it makes a fabulous ingredient in cleansers and night time routine products to wind down.
Can it get you high?
No, CBD alone cannot get you high. So don’t fret that if you have used a CBD infused product like a moisturiser in your routine you’ll be stoned by the time you get to your desk. THC is the chemical component of cannabis that can make you high; in the UK no CBD oil product can be legally sold with a higher THC percentage than 0.2% so there is no chance any product bought in the UK can make you feel any psychoactive symptoms.
Is it legal?
Completely. You can buy it in stores and over the internet. As CBD isn’t psychoactive, it’s not illegal, its only THC which is illegal to purchase due to the negative symptoms it can cause to the bodily functions.
