The first Monday of May is usually a big day for fashion fans as it hosts one of the most memorable nights of the fashion industry – the Met Gala.
The event, which was due to take place on May the 4th at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, has been unfortunately rescheduled due to public health concerns over the spread of Covid-19. The theme of this year would have been ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration’ inspired by the classic blouses and large gowns typical of the Victorian Age.
However, with the postponement of the 2020 Met Gala, the Internet decided to join a new fashion challenge which aims to recreate some of the most iconic looks from the past years. The was started by Vogue in collaboration with Billy Porter since they wanted to offer everyone the opportunity to participate and share their creations online. The chosen looks can be made with any kind of material: from newspapers to bedsheets and wrapping paper to tin foil. The only ingredient necessary is creativity. The attendants will then compete for the best looks to receive the possibility of being featured on Vogue magazine.
Many fans have already shared their recreations on social media and they don’t fail to impress us. In the top picks, there are last year Camp-style outfits such as Lady Gaga’s quadruple gown and Jared Leto’s beheaded look from the ‘Heavenly Bodies’ red carpet. The possibilities are infinite, but these are some inspirational outfits you may want to recreate:
1. RIHANNA’S POPE DRESS
This look stood out at the 2018 Met Gala where the theme was ‘Heavenly Bodies’. Rihanna wore an entire Catholic-inspired outfit designed by Margiela, which included a jewel, encrusted robe, a papal mitre and was matched with Cartier jewellery. It has been already recreated by Ned Fulmer from the TryGuys using only tin foil.
2. ZENDAYA’S CINDERELLA GOWN
If you’re looking for a more princess-like style, then this outfit will be perfect for you. Zendaya wore this Cinderella-inspired gown at last year Met Gala and was one of the most popular. The only things you need are a Cinderella costume and some neon lights.
3. BLAKE LIVELY’S 600 HOURS DRESS
This is definitely an intricate dress to recreate but with some effort and creativity, it can become a reality. Blake wore this Versace jewelled gown at the 2018 Met Gala and rocked the carpet.
4. KATY BURGER/CHANDELIER
If you’re opting for something particular and funny then Katy’s 2019 costumes may be the choice for you. The first dress is a literal burger and is accompanied by an olive hat, the other is a Moschino dress with three different layers of candles around it.
These are only a few of the many garments which you can stylise and personalise for your own look. If you are interested to participate in the challenge, just add the hashtag to your picture and share it with the world. Good luck and remember to have fun!
