In a first for W Magazine, Steven Klein has photographed the ever-evolving Katy Perry for its September issue and created the magazine’s first multi-media cover. Through 3-D scanning the images and the entire shoot being supported by a graphic and futuristic short film, W Magazine’s ‘Beyond the Page’ app, brings the publication to life with Katy saying “I feel very free.”
Throughout the shoot, Katy appears to be taking us on a rollercoaster of emotions. Set against a dystopian European backdrop, we see her clinging onto the side of a building, looking distressed in a car and pondering over her thoughts on the edge of a bridge. The whole idea was inspired by and a tribute to Fritz Lang’s 1927 film ‘Metropolis’ and Klein’s own ‘Opulence Video’ created for Brooke Candy. On a few of the photographer’s Instagram posts from the magazine shoot, he captions; ‘Get Inside Her Head’, which is a real homage to how personal this shoot was in relation to Katy. She has admitted to W Magazine that she has cried at some of her own songs as they are so personal to her experiences through love, politics and self being. At one point she is seen turning into a robot and powerfully recites the quote by writer Albert Camus:
“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to be so absolutely free that your existence is an act of rebellion.” A complete high fashion affair, Katy rocks stylish looks in the likes of Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, Prada, Swarovski, Bottega Veneta and Brandon Maxwell.
