The 2021 BAFTA’s awards took place over the weekend, celebrating the greatest talents within the film industry. With a much more diverse list of nominees for each and every category, female-oriented and directed films Promising Young Woman and Nomadland winning big and Tawainese Director Ang Lee receiving this year’s fellowship, it’s certainly a year of cinema to be celebrated, and a step towards better, brighter film industry.

One moment that stands out among many is the ‘Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema’ Bafta, this year awarded to Noel Clarke, a man who won the Rising Star Award only 12 years ago. In a movingly honest speech, the actor, director, and screenwriter, known for his stimulating and moving depictions of inner-city London youth, dedicated his award to the “underrepresented”. With the results of this year’s British Academy Awards, we’re certainly closer to the inclusivity we need, the representation and recognition so many deserve in such an unfair industry, and the celebration of art for what it is and not for the money put behind it.
