Last Night’s MTV Awards: Yara Shahidi’s Adidas Collab Is All We Can Talk About

Do you smell the freshness? The MTV awards were back last night, and the looks were served! The ceremony has celebrated the best movies, shows and characters all in a legendary night, presented by the iconic comedian Leslie Jones from LA’s Palladium.

WandaVision was the big star of the night, snatching 4 awards in total. To All the Boys: Always and Forever won as the best movie, and the best performance in a film was won by Chadwick Boseman in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Best Hero was won by Anthony Mackie for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Regé-Jean Page won Breakthrough performance with Bridgerton, and we couldn’t agree more.

But the star that truly conquered the red-carpet last night was Yara Shahidi. Opting for a look that was everything but low-key, she differentiated herself from the Gucci and Versace avid wearers and exuded elegance, casualness and originality. She wore a printed pair of trousers with a matching jacket and yellow corset, fresh off of her new collaboration with Adidas. The actor, model and activist (and now designer) is doing exceptionally well in her career, and at only 21 years old she’s making very attractive entrepreneurial moves.

Wearing one of the ReCreation Heritage tracksuits, she took inspiration from her beautiful and eclectic mélange of ethnicities, both Iranian and African/ American; the silkiness of the fabrics is a reference to the luxuriousness of Persian rugs.

“My first instinct was how do we honor the past in a way that also pays homage to the future, the one thing that I wanted people to take away was even though a lot of these details are specific to my own growing up and the things that impacted me, the entire campaign is about how we re-create our heritage. I’m constantly figuring out what it means to me to be Black and Iranian—it’s ever changing.”

Yara Shahidi To Harper’s Bazaar

Even in the details, Yara paid homage to her roots: the Superstar sneakers read from right to left, showing the way her heritage is subtly embedded into her identity.

Shahidi told Harper’s Bazaar- “Versatility [within my Adidas collection] was important, because I want it to be a tool like [the brand] has been for me. And I know just whether it be from red carpets to going to school or going to set my clothes that I travel with has been of the utmost importance.” And her attire for the Awards shows exactly this, the outfit completed by Christian Louboutin pumps and vintage Cartier jewelry, repurposed from the archives, for this red carpet look.
