The Gossip Girl Reboot has finally landed in the UK! Now available to watch on BBC iPlayer, the show is giving us major inspiration for our autumn wardrobes. Eric Daman, the original costume designer and stylist of Gossip Girl, has returned to update the cast’s style for gen-z. Expect the classic uniforms to reemerge for Autumn and Winter, along with a few more updated garments from the reboot.
Preppy Knitwear
The preppy, private school uniform is a Gossip Girl staple. Autumn is back to school season so expect loose button-down shirts, Chanel-inspired skirt suits, and oversized jumper dresses. Audrey Hope, played by Emily Alyn Lind, is typically seen in an oversized knit, paired with tights or a mini skirt. The sweater vest trend has dipped in and out of fashion but will certainly be returning, along with oversized cardigans and baggy jumpers as the weather gets colder.
Layering
It girl, Julien Calloway (played by Jordan Alexander) has a practical style of comfortable and casual athleisure for everyday wear. Her androgynous outfits are a mixture of varsity jackets, classic beige trench coats, biker shorts, and croc boots. Julien’s wardrobe is practical, meaning her layered looks are perfect inspiration during bad weather – follow her layering of hoodies and jumpers, with an oversized warm coat and knee-high boots for an instantly chic look.
Mini Skirts
Mean girls, Luna La (portrayed by Zion Moreno) and Monet de Haan (portrayed by Savannah Smith), adopt classic 90s, high fashion silhouettes from their vast collections of mini skirts. Rather than wear an awkward pleated school skirt, mini skirts and tennis skorts are the uniform aesthetic in Gossip Girl. Mini skirts are certainly not just for summer – follow Monet’s looks by pairing a black skort or pinstripe mini with turtlenecks, matching blazers and cute accessories, like berets or mini bags.
Formal Dresses
The array of soirées and parties attended by the Gossip Girl characters provides evening and formal wear inspiration. Contrasting to the oversized preppy uniforms, the character’s partywear is tight, shimmering, and made of bodycon fabrics. The dresses typically are either a long, extravagant black gown or a bold-patterned, colourful midi dress. After a year without dressing up, remember you can’t go wrong with a little black dress, but if you are feeling bolder find inspiration in Zoya’s orange sequined dress, or Luna’s high-low ruffled, floral gown.
The styling of Gossip Girl is beloved and nostalgic for many. As the reboot is now in the UK, expect a revival of the iconic preppy uniforms for Autumn/Winter, along with a few bolder choices thanks to the renewed styling for a gen-z cast.
