For a long time, the world looked back on the 2000s as a dark time for fashion and culture, but not anymore. Throughout the past two difficult years, many of us have sought comfort in familiar places, whether that be; re-watching old shows, listening to our favourite childhood albums or recreating iconic scenes from Mean Girls. Revisiting the tartan skirts, halter neck crop tops and moon bags ignited a fire in Gen-Z and millennials, to the point where we couldn’t resist bringing these trends back. We have a feeling the Y2K style will be staying with us throughout 2022, therefore, we are here to give you a head’s up on the trends to prepare yourself for.
Glitter
For a long time glitter has been frowned upon, and not seen as a glamorous or chic element for our makeup looks. Thanks to the rise in Y2K trends, glitter has seen a comeback and has been proven as a staple part of achieving a nostalgic twist to your usual makeup look.
Glossy Lips
Gone are the days of dry, crusty matte lipsticks. Gloss is the essential lip product that will be keeping us glam throughout 2022. To add an extra Y2K twist to your gloss, make sure to use a dark lip liner and live your Bratz doll fantasy.
Smokey Eyes
A smokey eye is a classic for us makeup lovers, and like all things Y2K, drama is essential. With this being said, if you’re looking for a timeless yet on-trend look, the smokey eye is what you need to kickstart 2022 in style.
Blue Eyeshadow
Blue was a much-loved 2000s eyeshadow shade, favoured by icons such as Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. As it makes a comeback to the red carpet with the likes of Gigi Hadid sporting the shade, we can expect to be wearing something blue in the upcoming months.
Y2K Hair Buns
Anyone out there who likes a low maintenance hairstyle can rejoice with this one, as Y2K hair buns are here to stay. Whether you opt for space buns or a slick back low spikey bun, you can guarantee to be on-trend and looking stylish as ever.
Braids
This year, whenever we have wanted to add a touch of flavour to our hair, we have gone for cute little braids. With the style rocked by celebs such as Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande throughout 2021, you will be on to a winner when wearing braids in 2022.
