We adore the popularity of blush at the moment. With the 90’s back in style, over blushing is the
biggest makeup trend of 2022. No wonder who can resist the sun-kissed blush look? So, it was
merely a matter of time until a new way of applying blush appeared.
Blush draping is a technique from the ‘70s, famous thanks to Cher’s makeup artist Way Brandy. It’s a
way of blush contouring your face to accentuate your unique shape. In the updated 2022 version,
makeup artists drape softer blush shades like peach, plum or coral onto the temples, under the eyes,
and even blend them into the eyeshadow. The result is a lush summery makeup look. We have seen
this trend on runways and many celebrities now, like Ariana Grande in her r.e.m beauty campaign or
actress Yara Shahidi.
On TikTok, makeup artists demonstrate how to recreate the new blush technique. Whatever your
preference, you can use liquid, lose or powder blush. Makeup artist and brand founder Hindash uses
his gradient palette to mix colours to create his desired blush shade. His model is already wearing
blush from the corner of her eyebrow down to her cheek. Then he applies the blush at the outer
corner of the eye and drapes it down the cheeks with a soft hand.
Also, Huda Beauty is a fan of blush draping to achieve a seamless blush look. She explains that even
though applying blush to your cheeks looks beautiful, it doesn’t give you a natural blend of blush and
leaves your under-eye area really bright. To prevent this, she applies powder blush with a fluffy
brush under her eye to achieve a softly blushed under-eye. Then she uses a pinker blush and puts it
on her cheekbones. Therefore, her brighter blush blends beautifully into her skin without leaving
crazy highlights under her eye.
Cosmetologist Alena Victoria uses blush contouring instead of bronzer as it flatters her face shape
better. With a dense brush, she starts applying the blush to her temples. From there, Alena blends it
out in a C-shape, down her cheekbones and up her hairline. With that technique, she brings her face
upwards and gets the attention to her eyes instead of her “puffiness”.
We love this new blush technique and can’t wait to try it out for ourselves. It is the perfect summer
trend to achieve a fresh sun-kissed look. So put your bronzer aside this season and get your blush
out!
